I moved to Nova Scotia five years ago and had a really difficult time adjusting to my new surroundings. Being away from friends and family, the friendship, support, and encouragement of this community has meant the world to me. In my line of work, self-care is crucial – I look forward to my workouts, I love how I feel afterwards, and I keep on coming back for more!
I joined CrossFit Onside in January of 2016 and I have to say, Jenny and Nathan are phenomenal!! They are so personable, fun, and friendly – I felt included right away and I can be myself. The atmosphere at the gym is welcoming and inclusive. The coaches will help you with your workouts and technique, and they really strive to create team environment. I love going 4-5x a week and pushing myself to achieve what I didn’t think was possible! Their coaching and encouragement has helped me gain the skills and confidence to even start trying my hand at CrossFit competitions, which I never thought I’d be doing! CrossFit Onside is outstanding on every level and I am proud to be a part of it.
First of all, I do not consider myself a sporty, athletic, or even particularly coordinated person. If someone had asked me a year ago if I would be participating in the 2017 CrossFit Open, my first response would be “What’s that?”, followed quickly by a 100% “no, that’s not for me”. Why on earth would I want to compete with people from around the world in a weekly workout that ranks my performance?!
After purchasing countless gym memberships when feeling motivated to get on the right fitness track, (eek! Summer is coming!), only to have said membership expire months later, following long periods of inactivity, I was in a rut. Someone convinced me to step outside my comfort zone and try an Intro Crossfit program called Foundations, at CrossFit OnSide. My first reaction to the suggestion was, not a chance, as I pictured those crazy people walking on their hands and climbing ropes. (The same people that breezed by me, running up the mountain when I signed up for one of those obstacle challenges).
I decided to give it a shot anyways. I was so nervous attending that first class, I felt like I was on my way to a job interview that I was about to bomb. Guess what? I actually enjoyed myself. The coaches, Jenny and Nathan put me at ease, and having Astra the gym dog provide extra comfort didn’t hurt either. (Side note, Astra provides comfort in the form of letting you give her endless belly rubs). I had been to gym’s prior, where I didn’t speak a word to anyone, just popped in my headphones and put in my time on the treadmill, counting down until the chore was finished. At On-Ramp, everyone introduced themselves, cracked jokes, and actually had fun!
Fast forward 7 months, (the longest I’ve ever stuck with any fitness routine), I’m participating in the Open, and I guess I consider myself a CrossFitter.
There are still TONS of skills I have yet to master, but the feeling of accomplishment when I am able to do something I literally did not think would ever be possible, (climb a rope!), is such a huge rush. I even feel proud of others at the box, (that’s CrossFit lingo for gym), when they hit a new PR, (personal record…CrossFitters love acronyms).
That feeling of community, of meeting people from completely different backgrounds, that I otherwise would never have come in contact with, as we all become stronger together- that’s why I CrossFit.

After deciding to get back into working out I joined CrossFit Onside. It is often intimidating to work out alongside people who are far more experienced than you but never have I felt so motivated and included by the amazing coaches and the great crew of people sweating alongside me each morning. What a fantastic community Jenny and Nathan have built at CrossFit Onside.
Energy. Enthusiasm. Passion. Perseverance. These coaches have it all. In just one year they have helped reform me from a person who didn’t even want to know about crossfit to the athlete who is now obsessed with trying to link her muscle ups. Thanks to their coaching I have achieved so many firsts in my crossfit training milestones and been inspired to actually start my own journey into coaching.
Over and over again, my partner suggested that we join CrossFit. Each time I made excuses or delayed the choice. I finally gave in 7 months ago and haven’t looked back since. Being new and (very) nervous about Crossfit, the coaches and members at Crossfit Onside immediately made me feel like a part of their close-knit community. The Onside Coaches emphasize doing movements properly and safely, all the while pushing you to be the best you can be. While I may not be the strongest or fastest – I am stronger and faster than I thought I could be, and more importantly healthier and happier than I was 7 months ago. Thank you CrossFit OnSide!
Shortly after moving to N.S I was looking for a way to get out and meet new people and have fun. With working a variety of shifts I needed something flexible, after discussing this with a few people, I decided to try CrossFit. CrossFit OnSide is easy to access from the highway and lots of parking. Although I do enjoy being active, I had never played sports and had not been attending the gym regularly for about 5 years. I signed up for the onramp and was very nervous the first few sessions and not sure I would be able to do it. My attitude and thoughts about CrossFit quickly changed! I felt welcomed and encouraged the second I stepped through the door, and learned that CrossFit truly was for all ages and fitness levels. I aim to go 3 -4 times a week and have never felt better! All the coaches and members are awesome, they are constantly encouraging and supporting you to reach your goals and over come your challenges, I have met lots of new friends and always look forward to going. Jenny and Nathan are experts at what they do and have created this positive fun environment that everyone should try, my only regret is not starting sooner.
Nathan and Jenny have been my morning motivation CrossFit trainers for the past 6 months. Their passion and knowledge of the sport is the reason I wake up at 5:00 in the morning 4 days a week to get my workout done. Their first rule is proper form, the second rule is giver’ all you got, and the third rule is to have fun doing it! I can do skills that I could not do at the beginning and it is because of Jenny and Nathan’s encouragement and skill progressions. Good luck at CrossFit OnSide!
