Who are you outside CrossFit OnSide?

This is such a deep question! I currently work at Dalplex (but am waiting for the day I can workout for a living), play rugby for the Halifax TARS, and love going to as many new restaurants as possible.

What is your sports & fitness background?

Main sport is rugby, and before Onside, I was a bootcamp and yoga kind of gal.

What sort of changes have you seen in your body, health and fitness since starting CF (before/after)?

I’m way more jacked! CrossFit has been one of the only things that has held my attention and given me real results – not just in the way I look, but in the way I feel!

Any advice for people just getting started or new to CrossFit?

#justtry No really, I know that the idea of CrossFit can be intimidating, but I think if you just give it a try you will find that it’s super fun, and only as intense as you make it!

Who are you outside of CrossFit OnSide?

Outside of Onside I work as a Paramedic. When I’m not at work or Onside, I’m working on identifying and addressing barriers trans folks face when accessing pre-hospital emergency medical care.

What is your sports & fitness background?

Growing up I played a lot of different sports (basket ball, soccer, baseball, etc.) but water polo was the sport that I held onto and it subsequently became a very large part of my life. I played competitively on provincial, national, and international levels as well as varsity.

What sort of changes have you seen in your body, health and fitness since starting CrossFit?

Since starting Cross Fit I have found a considerable change in my every day life both mentally and physically. I feel more clear minded and everyday tasks have become functionally more natural to me. At work we do a lot of lifting and moving weight around and getting in and out of unpredictable environments. Since starting Cross Fit these tasks have become considerably easier with less strain on my body. With the encouraging atmosphere and community of Onside making healthy changes throughout my life comes naturally.

My favorite Onside moment would have to be when I kicked Jenny’s butt for all 12 days of Christmas.

What sort of changes have you seen in your body, health and fitness since starting CrossFit?

Since starting CrossFit I have had a 40% reduction in my LDL-Cholesterol level, lowering my risk of developing life threating arterial blockages in the future. Also, when I started I could not do a pull-up, but now I can!

Any favorite CrossFit OnSide moments?

My favorite moment at CrossFit OnSide occurred on a weekend in the spring of 2016. I went over to attend an open gym session to work on some movements I wanted to practice. Coach Nathan was the only person there that day. Nathan helped me one on one with my snatch lifting movement for well over an hour although he had no obligation to do so. That day I left open gym was the day I decided to become a permanent member.

Any advice for people just getting started or new to CrossFit?

My advice for new folks would be to try your best, have fun with it, and enjoy being part of the community.

Outside of OnSide, I am an Elementary School Teacher with HRSB.

When did you start training at CrossFit OnSide?

I started training at CrossFit OnSide in September 2016

What is your sports & fitness background?

Growing up I played soccer and then got involved with synchronized swimming at the age of 10 and continued training and competing into my early 20s. At age 16, I became NCCP certified and began coaching the sport locally. Since then I have continued coaching for the past 12 years with Atlantis Synchro.

What sort of changes have you seen in your body, health and fitness since starting CF (before/after)?

After I stopped swimming, it was difficult for me to find something that motivated me to stay active and push myself. I was accustomed to a very team-oriented training regime and having a coach motivate and challenge me on a daily basis. After finally giving CrossFit a chance, I quickly felt motivated and excited about my own fitness and health again, and knew it was exactly what I needed. Even after only a few months I have felt a steady increase in strength and endurance, and have become more active in my free time.

Any favorite CrossFit OnSide moments?

One of my favourite moments was probably doing the summer beach competition with OnSide. With my limited CrossFit experience at the time, it was still a really fun event that I could participate in and enjoy! Also, I just really enjoy any moment when I finally accomplish a new skill. CrossFit is full of things I have never tried before, so anytime I succeed in doing something new, that’s amazing!

Any advice for people just getting started or new to CrossFit?

My advice to anyone new to CrossFit would be to have fun with it, let yourself feel accomplished every time you finish a workout, and have an open mind when trying new things! And maybe… stretch before you go home.

Who are you outside of CrossFit OnSide?

Today a name, tomorrow a legend!

What is your sports and fitness background?

I played ringette for a couple years when I was younger until I started Horse-Back riding lessons in the mid 90’s. Since then, Horse-Back riding has been my main sport.

What sort of changes have you seen in your body, health and fitness since starting CF (before/after)?

I think the biggest change has been how I view myself. CrossFit keeps my happy and is my sanctuary when I’m having a bad day (or week!). It’s changed how I view my own body. I no longer worry about the number on the scale or if I look ‘skinny’. I look in the mirror and I see strength. I see someone who can now do a pull-up, something that seemed impossible when I started this journey. I see someone who has pushed through the mental block of “I can’t finish” and has finished. There is a confidence that grows from learning your own strength, both mentally and physically. Hitting a new Personal Best or finishing a workout you never thought you could. CrossFit has made me a better person. Mind, body and soul!

What goal are you currently working towards?

Oh wow, where to start? I have so many goals! I am a goal setter by nature so feel free to ask I can show you my list of goals for 2017 on my iPhone. My current short term goals are Ring Muscle-ups and Chest to Bar pull ups. My longer-term goal would be to compete in the RX division at a competition in the next 12 months.

Any advice for people just getting started or new to CrossFit?

My first piece of advice is to trust the process. Show up, be consistent, do the workout to the best of your ability and you will see progress. My second piece of advice is not to compare yourself to others. CrossFit is measurable, so compare your progress to workouts from the past. It’s about being stronger, fitter, and faster then you were yesterday.

Who are you outside of CrossFit OnSide?

I have been married to my wife, Dianne for 28 years and we have a daughter who also enjoys the challenges of CrossFit in Halifax. During the winter I stay active with hockey and during the summer I keep busy riding my motorcycle and/or playing golf.

When did you first start training at CrossFit OnSide?

I started training with CrossFit OnSide in September, 2015.

What sort of changes have you seen in your body, health and fitness since starting CF (before/after)?

The main reason why I’ve stayed so busy as an adult is because of the challenge I have with my low back. I have repeatedly injured my back and once that happens, I’m out of commission for a while. My fitness objective with CrossFit is to reduce, or maybe even eliminate the occurrences of injuring my back. Since I have been a member of CrossFit OnSide, I have noticed fewer injuries. I also feel less sore (lower back) after a game of hockey.

Any favorite CrossFit OnSide moments?

One of my favorite moments at CrossFit OnSide was right after a Saturday morning workout. The weather was great so the decision was made to do the WOD outside. There were a bunch of members at class that day and we all worked out hard together. Once the WOD was done we all meandered about outside in the nice weather feeling awesome after such a tough workout. Everyone had good things to say to each other and just the overall mood was one of accomplishment. It was a great start to a great day.

I came to Halifax to start my career as a Registered Nurse, by attending Dalhousie University. After playing rugby for for close to 10 years, I made a switch to Mixed Martial Arts (MMA). I am very excited for this years CrossFit Open, I remember last year thinking “I can’t wait until next year, just to see the difference”. With the Open just around the corner, it’ll be exciting to see the improvements that everyone has made.

Any advice for people just getting started or new to CrossFit?

I think the best advice that I could pass on to a new member is to never think you can’t do it, you can….it will take time, but you can. Don’t be afraid to use the resources that are available Onside. Each staff member is very knowledgeable and excited to help you may goals and reach them.
